Installing a new bathroom vanity is one of the fastest ways to refresh a bathroom’s look and improve storage. This guide breaks the task into clear, beginner-friendly steps so you can install a vanity safely and confidently — without the need for specialist trades on minor jobs.

Step 1 — Gather tools & materials

Before you start, collect everything you’ll need. Having tools within reach saves time and frustration.

  • Adjustable wrench, screwdriver set, and pliers
  • Spirit level and tape measure
  • Silicone sealant and caulking gun
  • Pencil, bucket/towels (for spills)
  • Your new vanity unit, basin and tapware from Cargo Vanities

Quick tip: Turn off the water supply at the isolation valves before removing an old vanity.

Step 2 — Remove the old vanity

Start by disconnecting the water supply lines and waste. Use towels or a bucket to catch leftover water. Carefully remove the basin and unscrew the old unit from the wall. Inspect the wall and floor for any water damage and repair if necessary.

Step 3 — Measure and mark

Measure the area and mark the height of the new vanity. A common Australian vanity height is between 850mm and 900mm, but choose what’s comfortable for your household. Ensure waste and water inlets line up with the vanity openings.

Step 4 — Position and secure the vanity

Place the vanity in position and check it with a level. For timber or stud walls, fix the unit into studs for a secure hold. For floating vanities, use heavy-duty anchors rated for the load.

Step 5 — Install basin and tapware

Apply a thin bead of silicone to the vanity top, set the basin in place, and fit the tapware according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Connect hot and cold water lines and the waste. Tighten fittings—do not overtighten plastic components.

Step 6 — Reconnect plumbing and test

Turn the water back on and check for leaks. Run taps and inspect connections under the basin. If leaks appear, tighten fittings or reseal as needed. Once dry, use silicone to seal any gap between the vanity and wall to prevent moisture ingress.

Finishing touches

Allow silicone to cure for 24 hours before heavy use. Add a mirror, shaving cabinet or lighting to complete the look. Browse matching vanity mirror Mulgrave & cabinets to finish your bathroom design.
